FBI Charges Nigerian Man Over Alleged Kidnapping of U.S. Immigration Agent

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has arraigned a 24-year-old Nigerian, Damilola Bamigboye, over allegations of resisting arrest and abducting a federal immigration officer during an attempted arrest in Minnesota. Court documents say the incident occurred on December 10, when agents of the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) were monitoring him over claims that he had overstayed his student visa.
According to investigators, HSI agents were conducting surveillance on Bamigboye’s apartment in Plymouth when they spotted him inside a Jeep parked beside his vehicle. As officers approached and identified themselves, the situation reportedly escalated. Authorities said Bamigboye ordered his companion, Rekeya Frazier, to drive off, leading to a struggle in which one federal agent ended up trapped inside the moving vehicle against his will.
The FBI stated that despite repeated orders to stop, Frazier continued driving while the agent feared he was being abducted, especially as he was unfamiliar with the area. The chase ended near a police station, where Bamigboye reportedly fled into a grocery store but was later arrested. Frazier was also taken into custody after initially refusing to cooperate.
Bamigboye later admitted struggling with an agent and instructing Frazier to drive away, though he claimed he acted out of fear linked to past trauma from a kidnapping experience in Nigeria. The FBI said it has sufficient grounds to believe both suspects deliberately interfered with a federal officer in the course of duty. Bamigboye has since appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Hennepin County, Minnesota, and now faces formal charges under U.S. federal law.
