Federal High Court Affirms Nigerians’ Right to Film Police, Orders N7m Compensation

In a landmark decision on Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, reinforced the constitutional rights of Nigerians to document police activities in public spaces. Justice H. A. Nganjiwa, presiding over suit number FHC/WR/CS/87/2025, ruled that police officers must not harass, intimidate, or confiscate devices from citizens recording their operations.
The judgment also mandates that officers display visible name tags and force numbers while on duty, strengthening accountability and transparency within the force. The court awarded Maxwell Uwaifo, the applicant, N5 million in damages for violations of his fundamental rights, alongside N2 million for litigation expenses.
“This ruling is a major step forward for civil liberties and public accountability,” Uwaifo said in a statement shared with The Punch. “The court’s pronouncement underscores the importance of holding law enforcement accountable and protecting citizens’ rights in Nigeria.”
Legal analysts hailed the decision as a significant milestone for human rights advocacy in the country. According to The Guardian, the ruling sends a clear message to law enforcement agencies that citizens have the legal backing to monitor and document police conduct without fear of reprisal.
Human rights groups have also welcomed the verdict, urging police officers nationwide to adhere strictly to the directives and respect citizens’ constitutional freedoms. Civil society advocates note that the judgment could have far-reaching implications for policing standards and accountability across Nigeria.
