FG Targets April Completion as Abuja–Kaduna Highway Reaches 80%
The Federal Government has announced that the Abuja–Kaduna Highway is now 80 per cent complete, with 60 kilometres of the redesigned concrete pavement already constructed. Authorities say the remaining portion is expected to be delivered before the end of April.
The update was provided by the Federal Ministry of Works during an inspection conducted as part of the ongoing National Media Tour. Officials reiterated that the highway remains one of the country’s most critical transport corridors and a priority infrastructure project.
The contract, now being executed by Infouest Nigeria Limited, was reassigned after the previous agreement with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc was terminated. Chukwuma Kalu, Controller of Works for the project, described the road as a vital national asset and acknowledged the earlier setbacks that affected its progress.
According to Kalu, the highway was redesigned from an asphalt surface to Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) to improve durability and reduce long term maintenance needs. The project includes a 40.5 kilometer dual carriageway CRCP stretch, covering 81 kilometres across both lanes alongside a 17.3 kilometre asphalt section connecting the Kano–Zaria road and a 6.63 kilometre dual asphalt overlay in Kano State.
He disclosed that 60 kilometres of the 81-kilometre CRCP segment have been completed, leaving 21 kilometres outstanding. Construction teams, he added, are operating day and night shifts to meet the April deadline.
Robert Turner, Senior Project Manager at Infouest Nigeria Limited, affirmed the contractor’s commitment to timely delivery, noting that the highway would enhance economic activity, connectivity, and social interaction upon completion.
The Abuja–Kaduna route links the North-Central and North-West regions to the Federal Capital Territory and forms a key connection between Lagos and northern Nigeria. The shift to rigid concrete pavement is expected to improve longevity compared to traditional asphalt surfaces.
Maraba–Keffi Road Nears Completion
In a related development, reconstruction work on the 43.65 kilometre Maraba–Keffi Road has reached 90 per cent completion, with delivery projected for June 2026. The N73.8 billion project is being handled by China Harbour Engineering Construction Company under the Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.
The scope of work includes site clearing, stone base installation, asphalt binder and wearing courses, and reinforced concrete drainage systems.
Abdullahi Muhammed, Director of Press at the ministry, stated that the media tour underscores the government’s resolve to modernize transportation infrastructure nationwide. He emphasized that road development remains a key focus of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing the Maraba–Keffi corridor as a strategic gateway linking Nasarawa State and the North-Central region to the Federal Capital Territory.
Both projects reflect renewed efforts to strengthen critical road networks, improve safety, and stimulate economic growth across the country.
