FG TO INTRODUCE GREEN TAX ON HIGH-CAPACITY VEHICLES FROM JULY 1, 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new environmental tax policy set to take effect from July 1, 2026, targeting vehicles with large engine capacities.
Under the new “green tax” initiative, vehicles with engines of 2,000cc and above will attract a surcharge ranging between 2% and 4%. The policy is part of the government’s broader 2026 fiscal reforms aimed at promoting cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
Authorities say the measure is designed to discourage high carbon emissions and encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as electric vehicles and mass transit systems.
Smaller engine vehicles, public transportation, and electric cars will be exempted from the new levy as part of efforts to support affordable and sustainable mobility options across the country.
