FG Unveils Bold New Strategy to Combat Flooding Crisis – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will tackle Nigeria’s flood challenges with a new strategic plan. Speaking in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday, Shettima outlined that although various factors contribute to the recurring floods and other disasters, President Tinubu has developed a detailed roadmap to confront these issues effectively.
During his visit to assess the severe flooding that has displaced communities in Maiduguri, Shettima expressed deep sympathy for those affected, acknowledging the devastating impact on homes and livelihoods. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts and finding enduring solutions.
The flooding was triggered by excess water from the Alau Dam following the failure of its spillways, leading to significant downstream flooding. Shettima assured that ongoing efforts include evacuating residents, providing food, shelter, and medical aid, and implementing the federal government’s comprehensive contingency plans.
Despite proactive measures taken in response to the 2024 Flood Outlook, the current flood has surpassed previous estimates, marking the worst in Maiduguri in over 30 years. Shettima reaffirmed the government’s dedication to mobilizing resources and collaborating with the Borno State government to address the crisis.
The recent disaster highlights the growing impact of climate change, with Nigeria’s vulnerability to floods evident in past events. President Tinubu’s roadmap aims to address these persistent challenges by enhancing flood mitigation strategies, safeguarding communities, protecting agricultural areas, and strengthening infrastructure.
Shettima concluded by stressing the federal government’s focus on the welfare of affected communities, in partnership with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, to ensure comprehensive recovery and support for all impacted areas.
