Fierce Storm Ravages Osogbo, Leaves Residents Homeless

A powerful evening storm on Saturday wreaked havoc across Osogbo, Osun State, leaving homes, religious centers, and commercial buildings severely damaged and displacing scores of residents.
Eyewitness accounts gathered by PUNCH Metro on Sunday revealed that several neighborhoods, including Testing Ground, Oke Oniti, Awosuru, Gbongan Road, and Oke Baale, bore the brunt of the storm’s force. Roofs were ripped from buildings, and a large billboard along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road collapsed, briefly obstructing traffic on the busy corridor before it was removed.
Pastor Israel, whose church in Testing Ground suffered extensive roof damage, appealed to state authorities for support for affected residents. “The roofs of many buildings in this area were blown off. Many people have been displaced. The government should provide succour and relief materials to ease the trauma,” he said, echoing the concerns of other local leaders.
In response, Governor Ademola Adeleke, through his spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, described the storm’s impact as “sad and unfortunate” and assured that assistance would be forthcoming through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA). “I feel deeply touched and alarmed by the incident. My administration will put in place all morally and officially possible measures to offset the losses incurred by victims in Osogbo and other affected communities. I have also directed the Ministry of Works to clear the motorways swiftly to prevent further accidents,” the governor stated.
Governor Adeleke further highlighted the role of climate change in the rising frequency of natural disasters in the state, urging residents to adopt preventive measures such as tree planting and responsible environmental practices.
Local media outlets, including The Nation and Osun News, have reported on the urgent need for relief materials as communities scramble to repair damaged structures and restore normalcy.
Authorities are coordinating relief efforts, while residents continue to salvage their belongings and begin repair work in affected areas, signaling the start of recovery from one of Osogbo’s most destructive storms in recent years.
