Fire Service Explains Ban on Traders Sleeping in Abuja Markets

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service Department has announced a ban on traders sleeping in markets within the FCT. This measure aims to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks in these areas.
Mr. Adebayo Amiola, the acting Director of the FCT Fire Service, made this known during a recent news conference in Abuja. He explained that this ban aligns with the department’s emergency response mandate.
Amiola expressed concern about the 226 fire incidents reported in the FCT from January to June, attributing many of these incidents to traders sleeping in markets and other negligent behaviors.
To enforce the new regulation, the Fire Service will implement strict no-sleeping rules within market areas and push for the provision of alternative accommodations for traders when necessary.
Amiola highlighted that the construction of shanties within markets significantly increases the risk of fires. The department plans to demolish illegal shanties and conduct regular inspections to prevent their return.
“Disorganised layouts hinder movement and accessibility, complicating the navigation of emergency vehicles during crises,” Am
iola stated.
