Fuel Price Increase: Ajaero Criticizes NNPCL’s Role in Dangote Refinery Pricing

Petrol pump
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has expressed his concerns regarding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPCL) involvement in setting the fuel prices for Dangote Refinery.
Ajaero’s comments came in response to NNPCL’s recent decision to raise the petrol price to N1,030 per litre from N897 in the Federal Capital Territory.
During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Ajaero stated, “As we sit here, they’ve once again increased the pump price of fuel. What options do we have in such a situation?”
He emphasized the challenges consumers face, noting that despite their ongoing requests for alternative fuel options like CNG and improvements at the Port Harcourt refinery—issues that had been agreed upon with the federal government—little progress has been made.
“Now we see Dangote Refinery operating locally, yet prices continue to rise. The justifications for deregulation are failing, as a private entity appears to be dictating prices,” he said.
Ajaero questioned the status of NNPCL, suggesting it operates more like a private company. “Can NNPCL really set prices for Dangote and other private enterprises? These are crucial questions that demand answers.”
