Gabriel Suswam Discusses His Bid to Succeed Damagum as PDP National Chairman
Former Benue State Governor Senator Gabriel Suswam has reiterated his intention to take over from Ambassador Umar Illyya Damagum as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Suswam emphasized that the North Central region is constitutionally entitled to occupy the vacancy left by Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, referencing the PDP’s guidelines on filling such positions.
Regarding the selection method, Suswam indicated that the party’s national leaders would be responsible for appointing the next chairman. He noted that this would be achieved through a consensus approach rather than traditional elections.
He also expressed his worries about certain individuals within the party who he believes are undermining its integrity. Suswam pointed to the controversial congresses in the state as a significant factor contributing to the party’s losses in recent elections.
“Some members are attempting to manipulate the situation for control over the party’s framework in the state. Their actions resulted in a complete defeat in the last elections, and we must unite to prevent them from succeeding again.
“What they perceive as a temporary victory is unsustainable, as nothing can be built on a faulty foundation.
“The only ward congress conducted legitimately across 15 local government areas is what will endur
e,” he stated.
