Gaza Death Toll Approaches 60,000 Amid Ongoing Israeli Military Offensive

Since October 2023, nearly 60,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the continuing Israeli assault on Gaza, according to figures released Sunday by the local health ministry. The current death toll stands at 59,821, with 88 additional fatalities and 374 injuries reported in just the past 24 hours.

Rescue efforts remain severely hindered, with many victims still trapped under debris or in areas that are inaccessible due to ongoing bombardments, the ministry reported. Total injuries since the beginning of the conflict have now reached 144,851.

The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen. In the last day alone, at least 11 people were killed and over 36 wounded while attempting to access aid. Since May 27, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and over 7,500 injured while seeking basic necessities.

Renewed Attacks and International Legal Action

On March 18, Israel resumed its military campaign, ending a temporary truce and prisoner exchange agreement that had been in place since January. The renewed offensive has resulted in an additional 8,657 deaths and 32,810 injuries.

In a major legal development, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. Israel is also the subject of a genocide case currently being reviewed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
