Tragedy in Abuja: NSCDC Officer Blessing Akpan Killed Outside Her Home

A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), identified as Blessing Akpan, has died after being stabbed by unidentified attackers near her home in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of last Tuesday in the Piawe area of Bwari, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory. Eyewitnesses say Akpan was attacked right in front of her residence.
She was eventually taken to Bwari General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her death.
Friends of the late officer, speaking on Monday, July 28, revealed that following the attack, Akpan was rushed to several hospitals for urgent care. However, they allege she was repeatedly denied treatment due to the lack of a police report—a requirement that delayed medical attention and may have cost her life.
One of her close friends, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed deep frustration over the situation. “It’s heartbreaking that Officer Blessing died because of a flawed system,” she said. “Despite showing her official ID, hospitals still refused to treat her without a police report. We kept moving her from one facility to another until she bled to death.”
Another friend recounted that the attack likely occurred during an attempted robbery. “She was headed out when some people tried to steal from her. They stabbed her in the process to overpower her,” the friend said.
The tragic death of Officer Akpan has sparked outrage and renewed criticism of the healthcare system’s policy requiring police documentation before emergency treatment, especially in violent cases.
Photos from the scene have since surfaced online, intensifying calls for reforms in emergency response and patient care protocols.
