Gemade Advises Governor Alia on how to overcome Party Crisis
Former PDP national chairman, Senator Barnabas Gemade, has advised Benue State governor Hyacinth Alia that facing political opposition is unavoidable if he intends to drive the state’s development. Speaking during the governor’s 58th birthday celebration at Government House Makurdi, Gemade emphasized that making enemies is part of delivering effective governance.
Gemade stated, “In politics, especially where you are now, you cannot escape political enemies if you want to develop the state. Pleasing everyone is impossible; as you satisfy some, others will inevitably oppose you. Thus, making enemies is a necessary part of providing good governance.”
As the event chairman, the former Minister of Works further noted that political actions and words are often interpreted in various ways. He urged the governor not to fear creating enemies while fulfilling his duties. “Politics and governance come with unavoidable adversaries. People will rise and fall regardless of your actions. Stay focused, and know that we support you.”
Additionally, Maj. Gen. Lawrence Onoja (retired), former military administrator of Plateau and Katsina states, praised Governor Alia as a steadfast leader and champion of the oppressed. He lauded Alia’s commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to uplift Benue State’s underprivileged.
Gen. Onoja highlighted Alia’s transition from priesthood to politics as a sacrifice for future generations, quoting American politician and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson. He portrayed Alia as a devoted public servant, dedicated to bringing democratic benefits to the people.
Prince Solomon Wombo, representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo federal constituency, described the governor’s mission as one of state salvation. He emphasized the need for a strong leader to guide Benue out of its challenges. “We stand with you and offer our support. We pray for God to strengthen you against Benue’s adversaries. Any National Assembly member not supporting you lacks foresight,” Wombo said.
In his remarks, Governor Alia announced the start of construction on an overpass in the Benue South Senatorial District, also known as Zone C, to promote regional balance. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to state development and acknowledged the importance of hard work and empathy for the impoverished.
