Obinna Henry, a hair vendor and cryptocurrency enthusiast from Enugu State, has shared his experience of being extorted by policemen who falsely accused him of being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In an exclusive interview with AJIBADE OMAPE, he recounts the shocking details of the incident and how $25,000 was taken from him.

What Led to the Encounter with the Police?

Obinna Henry, from Awgu in Enugu State, was driving from Asaba to Oji River when he encountered a group of armed policemen. While navigating a rough section of the road after Onitsha, he noticed a government-owned white Toyota Hiace bus with tinted windows. At first, he didn’t suspect anything unusual, as other buses were also loading passengers nearby.

However, after briefly pulling over at a junction to ease himself, Henry was shocked to see the same bus block his car. Six armed men approached him and demanded his vehicle papers. Despite providing all necessary documents, including his driver’s license and tint permit, the officers insisted that he enter their bus.

The Alleged Extortion

Once in the bus, Henry was told he was being investigated. The officers, accusing him of being an IPOB member, began to harass him further. They later extorted $25,000 from him, with claims that he needed to pay to avoid further trouble. Despite providing no evidence to justify the accusations, the officers continued their threats, including physical intimidation.

Henry initially thought the money was meant for his business—specifically, the hair business he had been planning to invest in. He had already made contacts for buying human hair and had even identified a shop for the venture. However, due to the incident, he could not proceed with his plans.

Police Inaction and Lack of Response

After the extortion, Henry reported the incident to the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, who referred him to the Anambra State Police PRO, as the incident occurred in Anambra. Despite submitting proof of payment, Henry received no response after following up multiple times. His frustration grew as he felt his case was being ignored, and he eventually gave up hope of getting assistance.

The Business Plans and Lost Opportunity

Henry explained that the $25,000 was intended to pay for the shop rental and other expenses related to his hair business. He had already visited the shop several times, but the owner was unavailable, so he could not finalize the deal. Had the money not been taken, he could have used it to kick-start his business.

What Henry Wants from Authorities

If the policemen responsible for the extortion are caught, Henry demands they face disciplinary action, including suspension from the force and legal consequences. He emphasized that their behavior—threatening him, beating him up, and extorting money—was beyond acceptable limits.

Henry also expressed his desire for assistance in recovering the money. After discussing the incident with friends, they tracked the funds to a digital wallet, but the money was moved before they could intervene. Henry hopes the authorities will investigate the extortion and ensure that such abuse of power is not repeated.

A Call for Justice

Henry’s story highlights the disturbing reality of police extortion, where innocent citizens are harassed and threatened for no reason. He urged the authorities to take the matter seriously and provide justice, especially in light of the increasing instances of police brutality and intimidation. He also expressed his fear, recalling incidents where unarmed citizens were shot by police officers without cause.
