Ifeoma Eze Esther, a first-year Biochemistry student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), tragically died after allegedly being pushed from a three-story building at Padelia Hotel. Her death has sparked controversy and concern within the university community.

Initial reports hinted at a potential cover-up by the hotel’s management, but subsequent investigations have provided more clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy occurred late last month and involved Ifeoma, who was reportedly thrown from the building. Early social media claims suggested that the hotel’s management attempted to conceal the incident, and that the Student Union Government (SUG) was aware but did not act.

To address these concerns, Myschoolnews contacted the SUG Director of Information, who provided a detailed account of the events. The Director stated that the SUG was not immediately informed of the incident but investigated upon learning about it.

“Ifeoma didn’t die at the hotel but at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), where she was rushed immediately after the incident,” the Director explained. He emphasized that the police were involved from the start and had stationed officers at the hotel, leading to the arrest of the suspects who remain in custody.

Regarding the possibility of Ifeoma being intentionally pushed, the Director could not confirm this, noting that he was not present during the incident. He mentioned that Ifeoma’s roommate had tried to dissuade her from going with the individuals involved. It was also revealed that Ifeoma had checked into the hotel under the false name “Gift,” and the hotel manager was arrested for poor documentation.

The Director denied any cover-up by the hotel management, stating, “Even the parents of the child were present at UNTH and were aware when the arrests were made.” He noted that the hotel’s management had acted promptly by taking the victim to the hospital immediately after the incident.

Further details emerged when one of the suspects returned to the hotel early the next morning to retrieve his car, unaware that the police were monitoring the premises, leading to their apprehension and detention.

This tragic event underscores the need for improved safety measures for students and transparent communication from all involved parties. The SUG, while acknowledging its limited jurisdiction over incidents occurring off-campus, emphasized their role in advocating for student safety and welfare.

The incident involving Ifeoma is the second student death within a week. Okenyi Fabour Oluchukwu, another first-year student, was found dead in a drainage system inside UNN. These consecutive tragedies have raised serious concerns and calls for enhanced protective measures for students.

As investigations continue, the university community remains in mourning, calling for justice and better safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
