How Final Year Student Commit Suicide Following Threat faced by Lecturer who says he will not graduate

Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, reportedly committed suicide on Wednesday night, triggering shock and controversy within the university community.

The tragic incident occurred in her hostel at the Ishieke Campus of the institution in Abakaliki. Ugwuka, a final-year student in the Department of English, purportedly faced repeated failure in a particular course, despite passing all other courses. It’s alleged that a lecturer had vowed she would never pass this specific course.

Sources reveal that after failing the course once more, Ugwuka fell into depression and was often seen wandering alone on campus until she made the fateful decision to end her life.

In a video circulating online, a woman believed to be Ugwuka’s mother blames a lecturer for her daughter’s suicide, accusing him of undue pressure and harassment. She laments, “The lecturer said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide.”

Rex Nwome, a graduate of the institution and a friend of Ugwuka, corroborated the allegations, stating that the lecturer in question had allegedly vowed to prevent Ugwuka from graduating. He mentioned that despite passing all other courses, Ugwuka faced additional financial strain to retake the failed course, only to be failed once more. Nwome attributes Ugwuka’s distress to her exclusion from the recent NYSC shortlist, further exacerbating her desperation to graduate and serve.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that they received a report regarding the student’s suicide. DSP Joshua Ukandu, the command’s spokesperson, affirmed the investigation into the matter.

The tragic loss of Ugwuka highlights the mental health challenges faced by students, raising concerns about academic pressure and the support systems available within educational institutions.
