How Man was Killed and Burned by Mob in Ogun Over Motorcycle Theft Attempt

On Tuesday in Ilisan Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, a group of youths killed and set fire to an unidentified man accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle. The deceased, believed to be part of a two-man gang, was allegedly involved in an attack on an Hausa motorcyclist with the intention of stealing his bike.

Reports indicate that while one suspect was beaten to death and burned by the mob, the other suspect, dressed in an army uniform, managed to flee and took refuge in a nearby building after being severely stabbed. The situation escalated as the mob demanded the release of the suspect in the army uniform, expressing their frustration over repeated assaults and thefts by such individuals.

Wemmy Osude, Chairman of the Ilisan Development Association, stated that a large crowd of over 200 young northerners gathered outside the refuge house, demanding the suspect’s release. Despite attempts to disperse them, the crowd remained persistent.

The situation drew the attention of soldiers and police from Sagamu Area Command, who arrived in two pickup trucks to manage the crisis. The intervention turned intense when a commando-style rescue operation was launched to evacuate the suspect. During this operation, a confrontation occurred, resulting in a shootout as soldiers used tear gas to disperse the increasingly aggressive crowd and restore order.

Idereghi Akari, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 35 Artillery Brigade in Alamala, Abeokuta, clarified that the injured individual was not a thief, but rather a civilian, while the deceased was also identified as a civilian.
