How Nicki Minaj and Cardi B Embrace Nigerian Culture to Connect with Fans

As the Nigerian music scene gains international prominence, many global artists are eager to collaborate with local talents and immerse themselves in Nigerian culture. Among these artists are Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj and American singer Cardi B.
Both artists have openly praised Nigerian musicians and their unique sound. Recently, Nicki Minaj stirred excitement among afrobeats fans when she shared her enthusiasm on social media about Nigerian star Tiwa Savage attending her concert. Initially star-struck, Nicki posted on X, asking, “Is that really her y’all, don’t play?” Tiwa confirmed her presence and shared her enjoyment of the event. Overjoyed, Nicki responded, “Wow, what an honour. Thank you for coming! Queen things.”
In addition to her interactions with Nigerian artists, Nicki connects with her Nigerian audience by using Pidgin English in her posts. In one recent tweet, she wrote, “Go one day without lying abeg!” This led fans to ask about her familiarity with the language. To their surprise, she replied in Pidgin, saying, “Wetin be the confusion? I Dey have eyes o? I can read all the pidgin weh una pikin de put on my timeline every day.”
On the other hand, Cardi B went viral for dressing and dancing like an Igbo woman in a vibrant video, showcasing her moves while donning a traditional wrapper and headpiece. Her visit to Nigeria in 2019 further endeared her to fans, who suggested various Nigerian names for her to adopt as a way to connect with the culture. Some proposed the name “Chioma B,” while others suggested “Cadijat.” In a bid to settle the debate, Cardi turned to X on January 6, 2020, asking, “Let’s settle this once and for all, Chioma B or Cadijat?”
Despite their rivalry in the American music industry, the friendly competition between Nicki and Cardi continues to fuel discussions among Nigerian fans about who truly reigns supreme.
