How Northern Politicians are Making Effort to Remove Tinubu for 2027
Shehu Sani, a former Senator from Kaduna Central in Nigeria’s 8th National Assembly, has suggested that the recent visits of notable northern politicians to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, are part of a strategy to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
The FIRST CLASS GISTS reported that among those who visited Buhari were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, during a Sallah homage in Daura.
Buhari handed over the presidency to Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate, who won the election with 8,794,726 votes against Abubakar’s 6,984,520 votes on May 29, 2023.
Sani, also an activist, believes these northern politicians aim to revive Buhari’s political influence and rally support to challenge Tinubu’s administration. He predicted this effort would fail, urging northern citizens to reject these figures and their plans for 2027, arguing they have little to offer.
He stated, “Although these visits appear as traditional Eid homage, they are actually part of a covert attempt to build a strong northern alliance using ex-President Buhari to challenge and unseat President Tinubu in 2027. This is a regrouping of northern political forces for the next election, which is bound to fail.”
Sani criticized the attempt to reignite Buhari’s political charm and mobilize support through northern sentiment, warning that it could lead to further division and instability.
“The same Buhari who led Nigeria for eight years left the North worse off, with poverty and insecurity at unprecedented levels. After just one year of a southern president, it’s premature for northern elites to start plotting. Such actions could harm the democratic process and the country’s unity.”
Sani condemned the northern politicians’ obsession with power, contrasting it with the South’s lack of immediate opposition to Buhari’s administration. He stressed that political opposition should focus on policy and governance issues, not regional sentiment.
“Their obsession with power is unacceptable. Opposing Tinubu’s policies is a democratic right, but using northern sentiment for political gains is a dangerous tactic at this time.”
He added, “No significant southern opposition challenged Buhari for eight years. These power-hungry northern politicians are leading the region into a perilous political journey.”
Sani also highlighted the failures of Buhari’s administration, noting that the northern politicians who benefited from his tenure enriched themselves while the North suffered increased insecurity and poverty. He urged northern citizens to reject these politicians and their plans.
“Our people in the North should reject these figures and their schemes. They have nothing to offer. From the failed Baro Port to the Ajaokuta steel project and other unfulfilled promises, they left the North in worse conditions.”
