Hunger Protest: Poland Appeals for Release of Detained Citizens in Nigeria for displaying Russian flag
The Polish government has formally requested the release of seven Polish nationals detained in Kano, Nigeria, for allegedly displaying a Russian flag during recent hunger protests.Â
Deputy Foreign Minister Jakub Wisniewski met with Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires in Warsaw to advocate for the release of the detainees, which include a lecturer and six students from Warsaw University who were participating in a Hausa language program.
Wisniewski suggested that the students’ actions might have stemmed from a lack of understanding of local customs and laws. He urged for their return to Poland, where their families are anxiously awaiting their homecoming.
He expressed skepticism about the claim that the students were carrying Russian flags, citing Poland’s historical aversion to Russian influence and its strong stance against Russian actions in Ukraine.
The seven Poles are now in Abuja and reportedly safe, with a meeting scheduled for them with the Polish consul. The Department of State Services (DSS) announced their arrest on Wednesday and stated they are being interrogated.
The Nigerian government has cautioned against foreign interference in domestic protests, warning that any foreign entities involved would face “appropriate action.”
In addition to the Polish detainees, six Spaniards have also been arrested for their alleged involvement in the protests. DSS spokesman Dr. Peter Afunanya clarified that the detentions were not targeted but rather a part of security measures due to the presence of foreign flags at the protests. He emphasized that Nigeria welcomes international support but cautioned against using the country as a platform for actions that could destabilize its internal peace.
Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar highlighted the importance of maintaining good relations with other nations but stressed that Nigeria would not tolerate foreign interference in its domestic affairs.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police are preparing to manage any potential disturbances related to ongoing protests. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured that the police are ready to handle the situation professionally and will take necessary legal action against those arrested during the demonstrations.
