I Was Never a U.S. Target — Sheikh Gumi Dismisses Viral Claim

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has refuted a circulating report suggesting that he claimed to be the target of a United States military strike in Nigeria, describing the story as completely false.

Reacting via his verified Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi stated that he neither made such remarks nor ever believed he was under any threat from the U.S. or any foreign power.

“There is a piece of false information currently making the rounds, wrongly attributing to me a claim that I was marked for a U.S. attack in Nigeria,” he said.

The cleric stressed that he is living peacefully at home with his family and has no reason to fear intimidation or harassment. He explained that the confusion likely stemmed from a sermon he delivered in which he referenced a past security incident involving Boko Haram.

According to Sheikh Gumi, he had only narrated an experience from August 2012 when he was informed that Boko Haram operatives planned to assassinate him. He noted that the plot failed after the attackers were killed by their own explosive device before reaching their target.

“The two individuals sent to carry out the attack were instantly killed when the bomb they were carrying detonated near my residence,” he explained.

Sheikh Gumi called on media outlets that published the misleading report to correct their stories and issue public apologies, emphasizing the need for responsible journalism.
