Igbo Reps Urge Tinubu: “Grant Nnamdi Kanu Pardon to Restore Peace in the South-East”

In a renewed push for stability in the South-East, a coalition of lawmakers from the region has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that such a move could mark a decisive turning point in restoring calm and rebuilding trust.

Speaking after a strategic closed-door meeting at the National Assembly, the lawmakers — drawn from various constituencies across the five South-East states — emphasised that continued unrest, economic decline, and growing discontent in their region demand a political, rather than purely legal, solution.

According to the legislators, the detention of Kanu has remained a lightning rod for tensions, fueling agitation and hampering development efforts. They argued that while security operations have targeted criminal elements exploiting the situation, a long-lasting resolution must involve dialogue and reconciliation.

One of the leading voices in the coalition noted that the South-East has suffered immense economic setbacks due to fear, instability, and recurring violent acts attributed to separatist elements. “Our people want peace. Our markets, schools, and businesses want normalcy. And peace will start with a bold political gesture,” the lawmaker said, urging Tinubu to consider a pardon as an act of national healing.

The group further stressed that other regions of Nigeria had, at various times, benefited from political solutions in resolving conflicts, pointing to past amnesty initiatives that helped de-escalate long-standing tensions. They argued that the South-East deserves the same opportunity for reconciliation.

While acknowledging that the matter remains sensitive and divisive, the lawmakers appealed to Nigerians to view the request not as an endorsement of separatism, but as a step toward addressing grievances through peaceful and constitutional means. They maintained that granting Kanu freedom would not only defuse the agitation that has gripped the region, but also open doors for renewed dialogue between the federal government and stakeholders.

As the call gains momentum, the Presidency is yet to issue an official response. However, many observers note that Tinubu’s disposition toward negotiation and his earlier statements on national unity may shape how the administration addresses this latest appeal.

For millions in the South-East, the lawmakers’ message is clear: peace, justice, and stability must take precedence — and freeing Nnamdi Kanu could be the first critical step toward a more harmonious future.
