IGP Orders Tough Response to Arsonists and Disruptors Amid Hunger Protests

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has instructed police officers nationwide to take strong measures against arsonists and troublemakers as protests under the #EndBadGovernance banner are set to begin on August 1, 2024. These demonstrations, organized in response to hunger and economic hardship, will be held across the country.
In a statement released just before the protests, Egbetokun criticized the organizers for not providing essential details such as participants’ names and protest routes. He expressed concern over the “Take It Back Movement,” labeling it as having potentially undemocratic and illegal implications.
The IGP noted that intelligence suggests the protests could lead to widespread chaos and harm to innocent citizens. He emphasized that the police are prepared to prevent any breakdown in order and protect public safety.
All police units are now on high alert to guard against any criminal acts linked to the protests, including arson, intimidation, and threats to life and property. Egbetokun stressed that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
The planned protests, which are gaining momentum on social media, are aimed at addressing soaring prices and severe economic challenges exacerbated by recent government policies on fuel subsidies and foreign exchange. Despite warnings from the police, military, and the Department of State Services, and appeals from politicians, the youth remain determined to proceed with the demonstrations, reminiscent of the October 2020 EndSARS protests.
