Impeachment: DSS and Police Take Over Cross River Assembly
Heavily armed officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Dragon Squad, and the Nigerian Police Force have taken control of the Cross River State Assembly complex. All access points to the complex have been barricaded.
This development follows the impeachment of Speaker Hon. Elvert Ayambem by members of the Cross River State House of Assembly. Sources indicate that Ayambem was impeached on charges of gross misconduct and administrative high-handedness.
Investigations reveal that the plot to remove Ayambem had been in motion for several months, with members voicing their dissatisfaction with his leadership. By Tuesday, over 20 members had signed the impeachment petition. The motion for his removal was introduced by Hon. Effiong Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.
Following the impeachment, members took the mace from the assembly.
The assembly members have now relocated to Transcorp Hotel to elect a new Speaker.
