A devastating road accident early Sunday morning has left eight people dead in the Badagry area of Lagos State. The tragedy unfolded at Atura Bus Stop along the inward lane toward Badagry, involving a commercial vehicle and a truck.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident through a statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo.
According to the report, the crash involved a 16-seater Mazda commercial bus (registration number KJA 811 YF) and a DAF truck (plate number T14636LA). The collision, which occurred before dawn, claimed the lives of eight individuals on the spot — including the bus driver and his conductor.
“This deeply tragic event has cast a heavy shadow over the Badagry community, which is now grappling with immense grief,” said Adebayo.
Emergency personnel from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police (Morogbo Division), and the Nigerian Army’s 244 Battalion (Ibereko Barracks) quickly arrived at the scene. Their swift response enabled the rescue of eight injured survivors, who were transported to Badagry General Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Preliminary findings indicate that the bus driver was speeding excessively and lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in a deadly crash with the oncoming truck. The impact was described as extremely violent, leaving little room for survival for most passengers on board.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the crash site and expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. He emphasized the importance of road safety, noting that such tragedies are sobering reminders of how fragile life is.
He urged all motorists — especially commercial and heavy-duty drivers — to avoid reckless driving, follow safety regulations, and maintain their vehicles to prevent needless loss of life.
“This unfortunate incident might have been avoided if safe driving practices were followed. Speed continues to be a silent but deadly threat on our highways,” Bakare-Oki warned.
He also stressed that traffic management today goes beyond directing vehicles — it involves emergency response and lifesaving measures. To that end, the Lagos State Government has been implementing speed-monitoring measures in high-risk zones as part of a broader initiative to improve commuter safety and reduce accidents across the state.
