Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Supports Hardship Protest, Criticizes Police

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has publicly endorsed the nationwide protest set to begin on August 1, 2024, in response to economic hardships.

Governor Yusuf expressed his support for peaceful demonstrators and promised to personally welcome protesters at the Government House on Thursday. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, he affirmed the right of Nigerians to protest but urged that such actions be carried out peacefully to avoid any potential hijacking by criminal elements.

“Protesting is a fundamental democratic right,” Governor Yusuf stated. “I encourage protesters to maintain peace during their march. If they do, I will be there to greet them and may even join in.”

**Criticism of Police**

The governor’s endorsement comes amid growing criticism of the Nigeria Police Force. Yusuf expressed dissatisfaction with the police, accusing them of disregarding state directives.

“I am perplexed by the police’s refusal to follow our orders,” he remarked. “When we issue instructions, they claim to have received orders from ‘above.’ Who exactly is this ‘above’? I am the chief security officer of the state. If there’s an issue with this, it’s time to amend the Nigerian constitution.”

As the protest approaches, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has also weighed in, calling on the government to address the economic struggles of the population. “We need to find effective ways to support the needy and ensure aid reaches those it is intended for,” the Emir advised.

The forthcoming protest has generated significant debate, with some advocating for it as a necessary response to economic challenges, while others suggest pursuing dialogue to maintain public order.
