Kano TikToker Tsulange Jailed for One Year Over Public Bathing Skit
A TikTok content creator known as Umar Hashim, popularly called Tsulange, has been handed a one-year prison sentence by a Magistrate Court in Gyadi Gyadi, Kano State, after a viral skit landed him in legal trouble.
Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan delivered the ruling, stating that Tsulange was guilty of engaging in indecent behavior in public. The video in question showed the social media personality bathing in the middle of a busy road while dressed in female underwear—a performance that sparked widespread attention and backlash online.
Although intended as comedy, the stunt was deemed inappropriate by authorities and certain segments of the public. The court concluded that the act breached public morality and decency, sentencing the entertainer to 12 months behind bars. However, he was given the option to pay a fine of ₦80,000 in lieu of imprisonment.
In addition to the fine, the court also directed Tsulange to pay ₦20,000 to the Kano State Censorship Board to cover investigative and legal costs. The board was instrumental in initiating the case after the video surfaced in June 2025.
The sentencing has ignited discussions across social media platforms, with opinions sharply divided. While some argue the punishment is too harsh for what they see as satire, others support the verdict, viewing it as a move to uphold societal values and curb inappropriate digital content.
This case underscores the ongoing tension between digital freedom and traditional cultural norms, particularly in northern Nigeria where censorship laws are strictly upheld.
