Kunle Remi Sparks Debate After Comparing AMVCA Trophy Process With Oscars

Nigerian actor Kunle Remi has ignited conversations on social media after drawing a comparison between the trophy presentation process at the Academy Awards and the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
The Nollywood star shared his thoughts through an Instagram story while reacting to a viral clip from the 2026 Oscars showing Michael B. Jordan watching his Oscar statuette being engraved shortly after receiving the award.
In the video circulating online, the engraving of the actor’s name on the award was done immediately after the ceremony, allowing the winner to leave with a personalised trophy the same night.
Reacting humorously to the process, Remi praised the efficiency of the Oscars’ logistics and jokingly contrasted it with what he suggested happens at the AMVCA.
“So they engrave your name after you win right there and you take it home,” he wrote. “If it’s AMVCA, everyone will share one trophy for the night and come back later to collect it at the next awards.”
His comment quickly generated discussion among fans and entertainment observers, with many weighing in on the differences between international and African award show practices.
According to reports by The Punch, the post reignited online conversations about the structure and organisation of local award ceremonies compared to global events such as the Oscars.
The discussion gained further attention because it came shortly after Michael B. Jordan secured his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler. In the film, the actor played dual characters, Smoke and Stack, in a Southern Gothic horror story that reportedly received several nominations at the 2026 ceremony.
Jordan’s win also placed him among a small group of Black actors to have won the prestigious Best Actor category in the history of the Academy Awards. During his acceptance speech, he acknowledged influential pioneers in Black cinema, including Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington, for opening doors for future generations of performers.
Meanwhile, Remi’s remarks also revived memories of earlier discussions about his absence from the Best Actor nominations at the AMVCA despite his widely praised performance in the film Anikulapo, where he portrayed the character Saro.
At the time the nominations were announced in 2023, several fans had expressed surprise at the omission. According to The Nation Newspaper, many movie enthusiasts believed his performance deserved recognition.
Responding to the reactions then, Remi acknowledged the support from fans and congratulated colleagues who made the nomination list, while maintaining a light-hearted tone about the outcome.
Industry watchers say the actor’s recent comments highlight ongoing debates about award standards, logistics, and recognition within the African film industry.
Meanwhile, organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards have already closed submissions for the 12th edition of the ceremony, which is expected to take place in Lagos in May 2026, according to entertainment reports monitored by The Guardian Nigeria.
