KWAM 1 vs KWAM 2: Nigerians Call Out Inconsistent Treatment in Aviation Offense Cases
The recent arrest and detention of Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger now nicknamed “KWAM 2,” has sparked renewed debate over perceived double standards in Nigeria’s approach to aviation security violations.
Emmanson was charged and held at Kirikiri Prison following allegations that she assaulted airline staff during a flight with Ibom Air.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians are drawing comparisons between her case and that of Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal—also known as K1 De Ultimate or “KWAM 1”—who was involved in an airport incident last week but received only an apology in response.
Reports say KWAM 1 was found carrying a flask at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on August 5, and during a confrontation, splashed the flask’s contents on an officer.
In a subsequent video, the singer denied the flask contained alcohol, claiming it was water needed for medical reasons. He also issued a public apology to the Presidency, aviation officials, and Nigerians in general.
Some social media users argue that both KWAM 1 and Emmanson committed similar offenses, and thus should face equal legal consequences.
On Instagram, user #yung_hannibal commented, “An apology suffices. Whatever applies to KWAM 1 should apply to KWAM 2.”
Similarly, #heychiomaa questioned, “Why is she in custody? A simple apology should clear things up. K1 splashed water on an officer—that’s assault too. He even tried to stop the plane from moving. If assault demands punishment, K1 should be charged just like her.”
User #papiwemba added, “K1 is free at home despite spilling drinks on the captain and disrupting a flight. If you lack political clout in this country, you get treated differently.”
#hrhdejavu highlighted the disparity, stating, “This lady is being made a scapegoat, while K1 walks away with just an apology. Nigeria, know your people well.”
#ijodee_arts argued, “This is exactly how aviation security should have handled K1’s case when he ignored the captain’s orders. If this woman faces prosecution and consequences, K1 should too. While his apology is accepted, the legal penalties should be enforced to set a precedent.”
Some critics accused officials of favoritism, citing reports that Lagos transport union leader MC Oluomo intervened on KWAM 1’s behalf.
“Let them come to KWAM 2’s defense as well,” wrote #ashad0206, while #oluwakemi_ahmed joked, “Introducing K2 De Ultimate.”
On Twitter, #OurFavOnlineDoc noted, “Comfort Emmanson has been charged and remanded at Kirikiri Prison, but KWAM 1 remains free despite similar offenses.”
#OmotayoShokefun chimed in, “If K1 were already in prison, this wouldn’t be happening. It’s ironic that KWAM 2 faces jail or fines while KWAM 1 walks free.”
Others demanded accountability for the Ibom Air staff member who reportedly recorded and shared footage of Emmanson partially unclothed during the altercation, accusing the airline of violating her privacy.
#iam_damayor warned, “The staff who filmed KWAM 2 in that state will face serious consequences. Ibom Air is responsible unless he’s not their employee.”
The debate also reached Facebook, where Ohioma Imonikhe commented, “K1 got away, but K2 didn’t. Let this serve as a warning to K3 and all future KWAMs.”
