Labour Party Crisis Worsens as Rescue Movement Rebukes Oluchi Opara, Demands Public Apology
The internal crisis within the Labour Party has intensified as the Rescue Movement for a New Nigeria, an influential faction within the party, issued a scathing response to recent comments made by former National Treasurer, Ms. Oluchi Opara. In a statement released today, the group criticized Opara’s rebuttal to earlier remarks by His Excellency Faduri Oluwadare Joseph, calling her claims “inaccurate,” “misguided,” and “disappointing.”
The conflict erupted after Ms. Opara dismissed assertions that Faduri Joseph had played a significant role in revitalizing the party ahead of the 2023 elections. Joseph had previously characterized the party’s current troubles as “poetic justice,” a remark that stirred controversy and prompted Opara’s response.
Rev. Emmanuel Olorunmagba, National Media Director of the Rescue Movement, signed the statement condemning Opara’s comments. The group expressed disbelief at her denial of Joseph’s influence, particularly his involvement as a 2022 presidential hopeful and his financial commitment, including the purchase of the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.
“For someone who oversaw the party’s treasury to deny knowledge of these critical facts is absurd,” the statement read. “Even the most seasoned propagandist wouldn’t make such a claim.”
The Movement reaffirmed that Joseph actively participated in the party’s 2022 presidential primaries in Asaba, Delta State, where both he and Professor Pat Utomi stepped down to endorse Peter Obi. They pointed to photos and media coverage—aired by Channels TV, AIT, and Arise TV—as clear proof of Joseph’s contributions and presence.
Furthermore, the group accused Opara of showing a lack of diligence during her tenure and failing to consult internal records or engage key stakeholders such as former National Secretary Dr. Abayomi Arabambi before releasing what they described as “distorted information.”
Addressing Ethnic Division and Obidient Movement Concerns
The Rescue Movement also touched on rising ethnic tensions within the party, especially among factions of the Obidient Movement, which is predominantly made up of Igbo supporters. While appreciating the energy they brought during the election period, the group warned against allowing ethnic narratives to shape public perception of the Labour Party.
“One of our key missteps in 2023 was failing to counter the idea that we were championing an ethnic cause. The Labour Party must reflect national unity, not regional or tribal interests,” the statement cautioned.
The Movement reminded supporters that the Obidient Movement stemmed from the broader, inclusive Rescue Movement for a New Nigeria—founded by Joseph and other Nigerians abroad—which embraces diversity across all ethnic groups.
A Plea for Reconciliation
Ending on a conciliatory note, the Rescue Movement called for unity within the Labour Party, urging all members to move past personal grievances, tribalism, and factional conflicts. They stressed that cohesion is vital if the party hopes to effectively challenge the APC government in the 2027 elections.
“A divided house cannot succeed,” the group stated. “Now more than ever, we must rally behind a single purpose and vision.”
The statement concluded by urging Ms. Opara to reconsider her position, verify her facts, and issue a formal apology. The group insisted that only through transparency, integrity, and national unity can the Labour Party reclaim its role in Nigeria’s political future.
