LAGESC Storms Ketu-Alapere: Massive Raid Targets Beggars and Street Occupants

In a renewed effort to restore environmental order and public sanity across Lagos State, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has launched a massive clearance operation targeting beggars, destitute persons, and street occupants around the Ketu-Alapere axis. The exercise, which took residents by surprise, is part of the state government’s broader initiative to ensure cleaner, safer, and more organized public spaces.
According to LAGESC officials, the raid became necessary following repeated complaints from residents and commuters about the growing number of beggars and street dwellers occupying major roads, pedestrian bridges, and bus stops in the area. The presence of these individuals, officials noted, not only obstructs free movement but also poses security and health risks to the public.
Speaking on the operation, the Corps Marshal of LAGESC, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (Rtd), emphasized that the exercise aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of maintaining a sustainable and hygienic environment across the state. She explained that the government is not only clearing the streets but also making provisions for the rehabilitation and welfare of those affected.
“This operation is not about punishment; it is about protection and restoration. Many of these individuals are vulnerable, and the government is committed to rehabilitating them through relevant agencies,” Akinpelu stated.
Residents of Ketu-Alapere have expressed mixed reactions to the development. While many hailed the exercise as a long-overdue step toward restoring sanity to the area, others called for a more compassionate approach in handling displaced persons. A resident, Mrs. Abimbola Adeyemi, commended LAGESC for taking bold action, saying, “The situation had become unbearable. The roads were congested, and some of the beggars harassed people daily. This clean-up was necessary.”
Another resident, however, appealed to the state government to provide proper shelters and welfare support. “It’s good that the government is clearing the streets, but there must be a plan for those being evacuated. Many of them have nowhere to go,” he said.
The exercise also covered adjoining communities and major junctions, with law enforcement agencies providing security backup to ensure a smooth operation. LAGESC reaffirmed that the clearance will continue across other parts of the state in the coming weeks as part of a continuous drive to reclaim public spaces from illegal occupation and environmental abuse.
With this latest move, Lagos State reiterates its commitment to upholding the principles of cleanliness, safety, and orderliness — ensuring that public spaces remain accessible, functional, and reflective of a mo
dern megacity.
