Lagos Assembly Reveals Shocking Reasons for Obasa’s Impeachment

The Lagos State House of Assembly has revealed the reasons behind the sudden impeachment of its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, a move that has significantly impacted the political landscape of the state.
Obasa’s removal, which took place during his absence in the United States, was met with celebrations by Assembly staff and political observers on Monday.
Speaking to the media after the impeachment, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, accompanied by fellow lawmakers, explained that the action was necessary to preserve the integrity of the legislative body.
“Change is inevitable,” Tobun stated, emphasizing the gravity of the decision. “The members of this House, exercising our constitutional powers, collectively decided that we could no longer continue under the leadership of the Right Honourable Speaker. Today, we have made the decision to replace him to uphold the dignity and reputation of this Assembly,” he added.
Following the impeachment, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was appointed as the new Speaker, while Hon. Mojeed Fatai Adebola took over as Deputy Speaker.
In a broader restructuring, Tobun announced the dissolution of all key positions and standing committees, signaling a fresh direction for the Assembly. “This decision was not made lightly,” he explained. “We have a responsibility to ensure that this House serves the people of Lagos with integrity and progress. By removing the former Speaker, we are reaffirming our commitment to the people and the state,” he continued.
He concluded by stressing that the move was aimed at unifying the Assembly and enhancing its overall efficiency and accountability.
