Lagos Police Expose Officer Behind Viral Assault on Bus Conductor, Launch Full-Scale Probe

The Lagos State Police Command has identified the officer captured in a widely circulated video assaulting a commercial bus conductor, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for accountability within the force. The disturbing footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms earlier this week, showed the uniformed officer repeatedly hitting the conductor during a traffic stop, drawing condemnation from citizens and rights groups.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Command confirmed that the officer had been traced to a specific unit and had already been taken into custody pending further investigation. According to the spokesperson, the swift identification followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, who ordered an immediate probe as soon as the viral clip surfaced.
“The actions displayed in the video do not represent the standards and values of the Lagos State Police Command,” the statement read. “The officer involved has been identified, and a thorough investigation is currently underway. We remain committed to maintaining professional conduct and ensuring justice is served.”
The police assured the public that disciplinary measures would be taken if the officer is found guilty of misconduct. They also encouraged the assaulted conductor and eyewitnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Civil society organisations have meanwhile hailed the Command’s quick response, noting that transparency and accountability are key to rebuilding public trust. Some activists, however, insisted that the case must not end with internal disciplinary action alone, but should also include restitution for the victim.
Residents took to social media demanding decisive action, with many recalling past incidents of police brutality that went unpunished. “We’ve seen this before. We hope this won’t be another case brushed under the carpet,” one user commented.
As the investigation progresses, Lagosians remain watchful, hoping that the outcome will signal a stronger commitment to reforms within the police force. The Command reiterated its stand against unprofessional conduct and pledged to keep the public updated on the findings.
