Makinde Unveils Ambitious ₦891 Billion Budget for 2026

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has presented a bold and forward-looking ₦891 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, laying out a development blueprint anchored on infrastructure expansion, economic sustainability, and improved social welfare. The proposal, submitted to the Oyo State House of Assembly, reflects the administration’s continued commitment to fiscal discipline while accelerating growth across critical sectors.

Nicknamed the “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” the 2026 estimate signals Makinde’s intention to build on the gains of previous years, with significant allocations directed toward capital projects. According to the governor, the budget is structured to deepen investments in education, healthcare, security, agriculture, and rural development—sectors he believes are vital to strengthening the state’s economic base and improving the well-being of residents.

A substantial portion of the budget is earmarked for infrastructure development, including ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects that connect urban centers with rural communities. Makinde emphasized that improved road networks remain central to boosting commerce, attracting investment, and easing the movement of goods and people within the state.

Education also features prominently, with the state government pledging to intensify school infrastructure upgrades, furnish more learning materials, and recruit additional teachers to meet rising enrollment numbers. Healthcare, another key priority, will witness expanded funding for facility upgrades, medical equipment procurement, and community-based health programs aimed at increasing access and reducing mortality rates.

Agriculture, long recognized as Oyo State’s economic backbone, receives a boost under the 2026 plan as the government targets enhanced food security and job creation. Investments will focus on agro-processing, irrigation systems, and support for farmers through training and modern tools.

Makinde assured lawmakers and residents that the budget is financially realistic, backed by improved revenue projections and ongoing reforms to strengthen the state’s internally generated revenue. He urged the Assembly to expedite consideration of the proposal, stressing that early passage would ensure timely implementation and sustained economic growth.

As debates commence, analysts say the ambitious ₦891 billion budget—one of the largest in the state’s history—sets the stage for another year of transformative governance if executed effectively. For many citizens, hopes are high that the renewed momentum promised in the 2026 fiscal plan will translate into visible improvements in daily life and long-term prosperity for Oyo State.
