Man Detained for Alleged Attempt to Supply Weapons to Bandits in Plateau
Police in Plateau State have apprehended a middle-aged man suspected of attempting to supply weapons to bandits in Jos.
According to reports, the suspect, who arrived in Jos from Zamfara State on the evening of Wednesday, May 29, 2024, was caught near the NTA Park while allegedly trying to deliver arms to the bandits.
Ibrahim Maikwudi, Chairman of the Jos NTA Park, confirmed the incident to Punch on Thursday, detailing how the suspect narrowly escaped being lynched by an enraged crowd before security forces intervened.
“It was the timely arrival of security personnel that saved the suspect. Around 5 pm yesterday, the man was at the junction leading to the state Secretariat, opposite NTA Park,” Maikwudi explained.
He continued, “The man was pacing and making calls, informing some individuals to meet him at NTA Park to collect a delivery. Two nearby men, who noticed his suspicious behavior, alerted others. Our team approached him and questioned him, but his responses were inconsistent. They seized a bag he was carrying, and upon inspection, it was found to be filled with arms and ammunition.”
The situation escalated as the crowd attempted to assault the suspect, prompting the call to the police to prevent the mob from killing him. The suspect confessed he was not acting alone and that there were others involved in the operation in Jos.
Special Investigations Bureau officers subsequently arrived, arrested the suspect, and took him into custody.
