Masquerade Allegedly Attacks Imam and Muslim Shopper in Oyo, MURIC Calls for Calm
The Oyo State branch of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly condemned what it describes as unprovoked assaults on Muslims by a masquerader named Lobanika during a traditional procession in Ogbomoso.
According to a statement released by the chapter’s secretary, Ambassador Malam Ibrahim Agunbiade, the incident occurred on Friday, July 25, 2025, around Osaro Market in the Ojagbo area. MURIC claims that the masquerader forcefully removed an Imam’s cap using a stick as the religious leader was walking along the road.
The group also alleged that, later the same day, the same masquerader wielded a cutlass and attacked another Muslim within the same market area.
Describing the incidents as “criminal, disrespectful, and utterly unacceptable,” MURIC emphasized its commitment to peaceful coexistence and reiterated its motto, Dialogue, Not Violence. The group warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could inflame religious tensions in the state.
“In a culturally rich and religiously diverse environment like Oyo, we must protect harmony at all costs,” the statement read. “We are calling on traditional leaders and festival organizers to take urgent steps to rein in participants and prevent further provocations.”
MURIC also responded to reports of retaliation by some Muslim individuals in Ogbomoso, urging restraint and caution.
“We understand the pain, but we must not respond to violence with violence. Two wrongs never make a right. We ask Muslims to remain calm while authorities handle the situation,” Agunbiade added.
The organization appealed to security agencies to maintain close surveillance during masquerade festivities to prevent a repeat of such confrontations. It warned that continued attacks under the guise of cultural expression could spiral into broader unrest.
There is also growing concern over the upcoming Ololu Masquerade Festival scheduled for Monday, July 28, in Ibadan. MURIC noted that several community reports suggest rising tension ahead of the event.
“We urge the Oyo State Government and security officials to act swiftly and decisively to protect all citizens, regardless of religious background,” the statement said.
MURIC concluded its message by encouraging Muslim communities across the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding while awaiting official responses from government and law enforcement authorities.
