The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the recent spate of violence against security personnel, specifically targeting members of the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force.

NANS revealed that from March 2023 to March 2024, at least 154 military and police officers were killed by non-state actors.

Speaking at a press conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, NANS Senate President Henry Okunomo, alongside Senate Clerk AbdulYekinn Odunayo, expressed grave concern over these violent acts against security operatives tasked with public protection.

Okunomo emphasized that while some security personnel have been involved in human rights violations, any grievances should be resolved through peaceful and legal avenues.

He appealed to community leaders, civil society groups, and the general public to stand against these attacks and promote a culture of cooperation and mutual respect towards security forces.

“As students and future leaders of this nation, we must promote constructive and peaceful solutions to address grievances. Engaging in dialogue, reporting misconduct through appropriate channels, and pursuing systemic reforms to improve accountability and professionalism within our security forces are crucial steps,” Okunomo stated.

He called on community leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens to join NANS in condemning these attacks and fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect with security personnel. “We must remember that these operatives are our brothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors who play a critical role in our society,” he added.

Additionally, Okunomo urged the leadership of the army and police to caution their personnel against human rights abuses, noting with regret the involvement of military and police officers in civil issues such as land disputes, debt recovery, and the mistreatment of students.
