NAUS Lagos Chair Clarifies His Stance on Nationwide Protest; Affirm Students have the Right to Peaceful Protests
Reported by Tope John Fakinlede
In a recent development, Comrade Yemoh Miracle, the Chairman of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), CMC Lagos State Chapter, revealed that he was not invited to a significant world press conference. Instead, he received a letter of invitation to a different event.
The letter, addressed to the Students Union, invited them to a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Tertiary Education. The purpose of the meeting is to review the Lagos Success Story and propose solutions to challenges facing students in the state. The meeting is scheduled for July 23, 2024, at the New Glass House, Science Auditorium, Lagos State College of Medicine, Ikeja, Lagos, starting at 9:00 a.m. The letter, notably, admits only one representative.
Comrade Miracle discovered the world press conference only after an interaction session with the Student Union Government (SUG) students and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Tertiary Education and Student Affairs. Despite not being initially informed about the press conference, Miracle emphasized his role in representing university students in Lagos State.
He advocates for policies that alleviate the burdens on university students and upholds their right to express themselves, including engaging in peaceful demonstrations against unfavorable policies. He acknowledged the Lagos State government’s efforts to ease citizens’ hardships, citing the reduction of BRT fares as an example. However, he stressed that appreciation for such measures does not preclude students from exercising their civil rights to peacefully protest the ongoing hardships in the country.
Miracle called on the governor to ensure adequate security measures to protect citizens during demonstrations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining civility while expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation.
In an attached video, Miracle shared his opinions and advice to the government during the press release. He reiterated that the decision to peacefully demonstrate their displeasure with the nation’s hardship had been made collectively by the NAUS president and national leaders.
