Ndume Recounts How Tinubu, Buhari Convinced Him to Join APC

By Abdulqudus Ogundapo

Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South recently shared his experience of how former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Tinubu persuaded him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a video shared by Channels Television, Mr. Ndume detailed this account.

Mr. Ndume, who was removed as Senate Chief Whip on Wednesday, attributed this decision to a letter from APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and national secretary Basiru Ajibola. The letter referenced an interview where Mr. Ndume criticized the Tinubu administration and recommended his removal from his position. The APC leaders also suggested that Mr. Ndume leave the party and join the opposition.

In his response, Mr. Ndume emphasized his foundational role in the APC, asserting his long-standing membership predates Mr. Ganduje’s involvement. He highlighted that he, along with 21 other senators, played a crucial role in establishing the APC.

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Ndume recalled his time with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before transitioning to the APC. He shared an incident at the Imo State Lodge where both Buhari and Tinubu compelled him to sign a document affirming his membership in the APC. He recounted, “I am a founding member of APC. I was initially hesitant due to certain individuals within the coalition, but I was persuaded by Buhari and Tinubu to join.”

Mr. Ndume mentioned his current consideration of whether to leave the party, stating he would consult with his constituents before making a final decision. He said, “I did not join the APC impulsively; it was after consulting with my people. I will seek their guidance again before deciding.”

### Persuaded to Accept Chief Whip Position

In the same video, Mr. Ndume revealed that he was urged to accept the role of Senate Chief Whip due to his successful campaign efforts for Godswill Akpabio’s election as senate president. He added that he was given the opportunity to choose his preferred committee position, opting to be vice chairman of the appropriation committee.

He clarified, “The appropriation committee position was offered to me not out of desperation but because I was requested to take on the role of Chief Whip. I chose the appropriation committee to ensure justice for my people.”

Mr. Ndume, who previously served as the minority leader of the House of Representatives under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), accepted the Senate’s decision to remove him as Chief Whip with grace. He remarked, “The recommendation to remove me as Chief Whip is an act of God. I did not seek these positions for personal gain. I contested to serve as a senator, and I am grateful for that opportunity.”

This recount of events provides insight into the political dynamics and personal convictions of Senator Ali Ndume, highlighting his significant role in the formation and development of the APC.
