New Immigration Registration Policy in the U.S.
The United States has implemented a new requirement for all immigrants to register with U.S. immigration authorities, ensuring adherence to American immigration laws.
This new regulation, introduced as part of an executive order titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to enforce a previously overlooked federal law.
Immigrants who do not comply with the registration process may face serious legal consequences, including fines or prosecution.
As reported by TravelBiz, this policy will take effect on February 25, 2025. Foreign nationals who haven’t yet registered with the U.S. government are urged to do so immediately to avoid any immigration-related penalties.
The registration process requires individuals to record their presence in the U.S., enabling authorities to track immigration status and ensure legal compliance.
Non-compliance may lead to significant legal consequences, including fines and further actions from immigration authorities.
Who Is Required to Register?
This new policy applies to foreign nationals aged 14 and above, provided they meet the criteria specified in Section 262 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Those required to register include:
Individuals who did not register or provide fingerprints during their U.S. visa application process.
Foreign nationals who have been in the U.S. for over 30 days.
Parents or guardians of children under 14 who have stayed in the U.S. for more than 30 days.
Those who turn 14, who must re-register within 30 days of their birthday.
Exemptions from Registration
Certain foreign nationals, who have already registered through other immigration processes, are not required to take further action. These include:
Green Card holders (Lawful Permanent Residents).
Visa holders with an I-94 form or employment authorization document.
Individuals who have applied for U.S. residency, even if their application was denied.
Those currently undergoing removal proceedings.
Who Needs to Register by February 25, 2025?
To avoid penalties, the following groups must complete their registration before the deadline:
Undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. without inspection.
Canadian visitors who entered through land border crossings without registration documentation.
DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) or Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applicants who were not provided official registration proof.
How to Register
DHS will soon initiate an online registration system. Those required to register must create an account on the USCIS website and follow the instructions provided on the USCIS Alien Registration Portal. It is crucial to complete the process on time to avoid penalties.
Verify Your Registration Status
Immigration experts recommend that foreign nationals check their registration status as a precaution. Ensuring compliance can help avoid potential legal issues.
Individuals should stay updated on the latest news and guidelines from DHS and USCIS to ensure full compliance with the new policy.
