It is not shocking to me that the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, would refer to Nigeria as a “disgrace country.” Such a statement is not an attempt to ridicule and demean our country, but to make us to work on the need to make Nigeria work.

Nigeria has long been battling deep-rooted decay and misgovernance. We seem to have forgotten the suffering of the people, the endless kidnappings, the insecurity, and the widespread poverty. Despite these realities, many still defend Nigeria as though it were a perfect nation where nothing goes wrong. The government must urgently address insecurity rather than negotiating with terrorists.

Nigerians have developed the habit of “suffering and smiling,” always defending the system even in hardship. Ironically, some citizens have even called for foreign intervention in others country such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ukraine, despite the fact that these countries have far fewer criminal activities compare to Nigeria, they faced such situations.

Do I support an invasion of Nigeria? The answer is NO.

However, this moment should serve as an opportunity for our government to sit up, reflect, and begin to rebuild the nation.

Nigeria is a sovereign nation, but in truth, we are not politically or economically independent. A few individuals have hijacked the political process. Our leaders manage national finances as though they are selling the country. Nigeria’s debt now stands at about ₦23 trillion, billions of dollars. But we must ask: where does the money we borrow come from? These funds often originate from U.S.-linked entities and global institutions like the World Bank. When we borrow from these banks, we become beholden to them.

So, when Mr. Trump calls Nigeria a “disgrace,” let us not dismiss his words at face value. He has access to intelligence and data; he knows our capacity, our resources, and how our leaders are mismanaging and looting the nation’s wealth.

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, he removed fuel subsidies, claiming the government saved ₦1 trillion in the first month. By that calculation, over two years, we should have saved more than ₦24 trillion. Yet, can Nigerians feel any positive impact in our economy today, we what they told us they are saving? The answer is no.

Despite these so-called savings, this administration has borrowed more money in two years than the Buhari government did in eight. Meanwhile, thousands of Nigerians continue to flee the country every week, not only to Western nations but even to other African countries.

If invasion is not the solution to Nigeria’s problems, then we must face the truth: our current government bears responsibility for the nation’s disgrace. Economically and politically, Nigeria has become a shadow of its potential. Our leaders disobey court orders, neglect the welfare of the people, and even our military personnel complain of being under-equipped compared to terrorists.

Yet, many Nigerians rush to defend this same government. But let us be honest, the U.S. does not need to seek anyone’s permission to act if it chooses to. History has shown this in Venezuela and Pakistan, where interventions occurred without prior announcements.

Trump’s warning, if genuine, should serve as a wake-up call to our leaders: enough is enough. The government must fix insecurity, stop the kidnappings, and end corruption. Instead of defecting to political parties for selfish gain, Nigerians should start defecting to the truth, to justice, good governance, and national progress.

Before we rush to defend Nigeria’s image, we must ask ourselves:

Are our resources well managed?

Is our government truly functional?

Is our leadership not a disgrace to the world?

Our government officials should stop wasting public funds on endless foreign trips. The President should remain in Nigeria and focus on rebuilding the nation. The old politicians should step aside and allow the youth to lead. But they refuse to do so because they want their names to remain on the ballot forever.

The world is changing, and the message from Donald Trump’s tweet, whether literal or symbolic, should be taken as a warning. No Nigerian deserves to die due to insecurity or government negligence. Enough is enough.

We must tell ourselves the truth: Nigeria is not working. Instead of attacking the U.S. President, our focus should be on fixing our country and restoring dignity to our people.
