Nigeria Mourns the Loss of Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first rose to national prominence as a military ruler after the 1983 coup. Known for his firm stance against corruption and discipline-focused leadership, his time as military head of state between 1983 and 1985 remains one of the most discussed periods in Nigeria’s history.

In 2015, three decades after his military leadership, Buhari made a historic return to power as a democratically elected president under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He became the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat a sitting president, marking a significant shift in the nation’s political dynamics.

During his two-term tenure from 2015 to 2023, President Buhari’s administration focused on anti-corruption efforts, infrastructure development, and the fight against insurgency in the northeast. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow at Buhari’s passing, describing him as “a patriot who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication.” In a statement from Aso Rock, Tinubu called on Nigerians to honor Buhari’s memory by upholding the values of integrity and national unity he often championed.

Across the country, flags were flown at half-mast, and prayer vigils were held in several cities, including Lagos, Kano, and Abuja. On social media, citizens shared personal stories and reflections, many describing Buhari as a symbol of resilience, modesty, and national pride.
