Nigerian Illegal Miner Arrested for Armed Robbery of Mobile Money Vendor in Accra

The Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma, a 36-year-old Nigerian national and illegal mining operator (galamsey), in connection with an armed robbery targeting a Mobile Money vendor at Avenor, Accra.
According to a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Greater Accra Police Service, Chukwuma was arrested following a failed attempt to escape law enforcement officers.
The incident took place on Sunday, June 30, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., while the victim was attending to customers at her place of business. Investigations revealed that Chukwuma, along with an accomplice identified as Emeka, approached the victim on an unregistered motorcycle and brandished a firearm to demand money.
During the confrontation, Chukwuma reportedly discharged three warning shots, one of which struck the victim in the left leg. In fear for her life, she surrendered her bag containing GHS 20,000.
A courageous bystander pursued the suspects and raised an alarm, prompting the intervention of other members of the public. The chase resulted in the suspects losing control of their motorcycle. Chukwuma was immediately apprehended, while Emeka managed to escape.
During interrogation, Chukwuma confessed to the crime and disclosed that he and Emeka had planned to flee to Nigeria, having already secured travel tickets.
Chukwuma has been formally charged and remanded in police custody. He is scheduled to appear before the court again on July 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, the stolen bag containing GH₵ 9,000 was recovered and returned to the victim.
The Accra Regional Police Command praised the bravery and quick response of the bystanders involved in the arrest. The police have also urged the public to continue assisting law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities through the hotlines 18555 or 191.
“The Accra Regional Police Command commends the bravery and support of the public and assures continued efforts to apprehend Emeka, the accomplice currently at large,” the statement concluded.
