Nigerian Police Dismiss Officer for Refusing Transfer and Illegally Operating
Calabar, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed Corporal Buba Adamu for failing to report to his new assignment in Kaduna. Adamu had been transferred from the Cross River State Police Command, where he had served for nine years.
Instead of relocating, Adamu allegedly promoted himself to the rank of superintendent and continued to operate illicitly within the Cross River command. During a press briefing in Calabar, command spokesperson Irene Ugbo stated that since 2015, Adamu had been functioning as a “mobile police officer” without any supervision or affiliation with a specific police command.
Despite not reporting to his designated station in Kaduna, Adamu continued to draw a salary from the force. His activities came to light when concerned residents of the Nassarawa community, a Hausa/Fulani settlement in Calabar, reported his misconduct to the authorities.
Following his detention, there were reports of attempts to pressure the police command into releasing Adamu. However, the command has taken decisive action.
“As of today, Corporal Adamu is no longer a policeman, because he has been relieved of his duties,” Ugbo announced. She confirmed that all police property in Adamu’s possession, including uniforms and identification cards, had been retrieved.
The case has now been handed over to the judiciary, with charges filed against Adamu. “The matter has now been charged to court. It is left for the judiciary. The court will take it up from where we stopped, as we have done the needful,” Ugbo concluded.
