NIMechE Leadership Says Engineers Pivotal to Nigeria’s Sustainable Development

The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) has highlighted the indispensable role of engineers in steering Nigeria toward a sustainable and technologically advanced future, stressing the need for innovation, ethics, and forward-thinking solutions in a rapidly changing world.
Speaking at the inauguration of Kabir Aminu as the 10th Chairman of NIMechE’s Ibadan branch, Dr. Babagana Tela, National Chairman of the institution, stressed that modern engineering must go beyond technical competence to include sustainability, ethical responsibility, and societal impact. The ceremony, which took place on Saturday in Ibadan, also marked the induction of other executive members.
“The world we live in is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by technological breakthroughs, climate challenges, and shifting economic realities. Engineering cannot remain static—it must adapt, innovate, and lead,” Tela said, as reported by BusinessDay Nigeria.
Tela urged engineers, particularly those in mechanical disciplines, to embrace innovation and integrate cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy systems, smart manufacturing, and sustainable design into daily practice. “The future belongs to solution-driven innovators who can tackle both local and global challenges,” he added.
The incoming Ibadan branch chairman, Kabir Aminu, pledged to promote professional development, mentorship, and collaboration among engineers. “Our priorities include growing membership, fostering mentorship programs, organizing technical seminars, and ensuring continuous skill development for our members,” Aminu said during his inaugural address. He also emphasized strengthening partnerships with industry and academia to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The event attracted notable figures, including the Royal Father, the Alafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, represented by his wife, Queen Abiwumi Owoade. The Alafin, a mechanical engineer himself, underscored the need for engineers to lead technological transformation in Nigeria, urging them to combine ethical practices with innovative thinking.
“The nation requires engineers who are not only technically skilled but also ethical, forward-looking, and dedicated to nation-building,” the Alafin said. “Our traditional institutions will continue to align with progress, ensuring that heritage evolves alongside modern advancement.”
The inauguration featured keynote speeches, lectures, awards presentations, and the commissioning of NIMechE ambassadors, highlighting the institution’s commitment to professional excellence, innovation, and sustainable development.
According to Vanguard Nigeria, initiatives like this are part of a growing effort to position engineers as central actors in Nigeria’s economic and technological growth, particularly in addressing climate challenges and infrastructure deficits.
