Nkechi Blessing Shares Why She Stepped Away from Nollywood, And the Million-Naira Reason Behind It

Nigerian actress Nkechi Blessing recently opened up about her decision to step back from the movie scene, revealing a surprising financial incentive behind her temporary exit.
During a chat on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, Nkechi disclosed that she initially paused her acting career to explore other business opportunities. However, her hiatus stretched longer than expected after an anonymous benefactor began sending her N1 million every week.
According to her, anytime she mentioned going back to work on set, the mysterious man would ask how much she was being offered for the role—then transfer even more than that amount to her account.
“I originally took a break to focus on other things,” she said. “But then I met someone who started paying me N1 million every week. Honestly, I wouldn’t even make that much from some movie roles. So whenever I told him I was returning to set, he’d ask my fee and then just send more.”
Nkechi also addressed the challenges she has faced in being recognized for her talent, admitting she feels overlooked within the industry. She believes this perception stemmed from how she presented herself early in her career.
“I know I’m a strong actress, but I’ve been underrated,” she said. “When I started out, I focused a lot on flaunting my body, and that distracted people from seeing my actual talent. That was on me, and I’m working to change that.”
Back in October 2024, Nkechi’s suspension from the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) was lifted. She had been suspended for three years following a heated public dispute with fellow actor Kehinde Adams (popularly known as Lege Miami) over the controversial arrest of actor Baba Ijesha, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor. Nkechi’s open criticism of the association at the time contributed to the disciplinary action.
