The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has issued a stern warning to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, urging him to avoid confrontation with the union following the recent invasion of the NLC office in the state by security personnel.
In a statement, the NLC expressed concern over the unlawful break-in at the office of the Edo State Council of the NLC by police officers from the Edo State Police Command. The union also raised alarm over reports suggesting the police may have acted under the governor’s direction.
Ajaero emphasized that regardless of whether the police acted independently or under the governor’s orders, the NLC demanded a public apology for what it described as an assault on workersā rights and a violation of democratic principles.
He warned the governor to refrain from engaging in any acts that could harass or intimidate trade union leaders, which he described as not only a violation of workers’ rights but a threat to the countryās democracy.
Ajaero also cautioned the police to respect their professional integrity, advising them to refuse involvement in any unlawful actions that go against their oath of office.
He concluded by reminding the Edo State government that it is too early for a confrontation with the NLC. “Leave the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress alone,” he said. “It’s too soon to start a fight with us.”
