Northern Youths Rally Behind FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, Dismiss Smear Campaign as Futile

Dr Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of FIRS

Youths from Nigeria’s Northern region, represented by the Northern Youths Movement (NYM), have condemned a perceived orchestrated smear campaign targeting Dr. Zacch Adedeji, the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), labeling it an “exercise in futility.”

The group noted that certain individuals appear discontent with Dr. Adedeji’s accomplishments during his first year in office, prompting attempts to tarnish his reputation. They emphasized that sensible Nigerians support the FIRS Chairman and that these smear efforts are unlikely to succeed.

In response to an online report suggesting that Dr. Adedeji was meddling in the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) investigation concerning the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, the NYM dismissed the claims as “childish propaganda,” stating, “even a one-year-old wouldn’t believe such nonsense.”

In a statement issued in Abuja, signed by Chairman Mallam Ishaya Jato, the NYM asserted, “What matters to Nigerians is whether Dr. Zacch Adedeji is effectively fulfilling his role and enhancing the country’s revenue, which he is.”

The youths also criticized the false premise surrounding the alleged appointment of former ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, as a Special Adviser to Dr. Adedeji, questioning why such a move should be viewed negatively. They argued that a former ICPC Chairman should be allowed to contribute to the nation in any capacity.

They further contended that those behind the smear campaign must have scoured Dr. Adedeji’s record without finding any valid criticism, resulting in the fabrication of unfounded stories. They reaffirmed that the FIRS Chairman has consistently demonstrated competence in his role.

Notably, Dr. Adedeji has been credited with a substantial increase in non-oil revenue, the addition of over 200,000 new taxpayers, and a 20% rise in tax compliance as of September this year. His leadership has also streamlined the tax payment process, allowing taxpayers to fulfill their obligations online without needing to visit FIRS offices, thereby reducing compliance costs and enhancing efficiency.

In conclusion, the NYM urged those behind the false narratives to reconsider their actions and focus on productive endeavors that would benefit themselves and the country.
