Obasanjo says Nigeria Must Prioritise Education to Achieve Development

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has stressed the importance of investing in education, warning that countries that fail to prioritise their education systems risk stagnation and long-term underdevelopment.

Obasanjo made the remarks on Friday during the commissioning of newly refurbished science laboratories at African Church Grammar School in Apata Ganga, Ibadan. The upgraded Chemistry and Biology laboratories were donated by Adefisayo Oduwole, a member of the school’s 1976 alumni class, as part of activities commemorating the institution’s 50th anniversary.

Speaking at the ceremony, the former president emphasised that education remains a lifelong pursuit and called on Nigerians with the means to support schools and learning institutions across the country.

According to reports by The Punch, Obasanjo described the laboratory project as a commendable initiative that should inspire other alumni groups and philanthropists to contribute to the advancement of education.

“Learning is a continuous journey,” Obasanjo said. “The day a person stops learning is the day progress begins to fade. Investments in education are among the most meaningful contributions anyone can make to society.”

He noted that improved academic facilities, particularly laboratories, are essential for strengthening science and technology education, which he described as a key driver of national development.

Obasanjo also highlighted his personal commitment to learning, noting that even at an advanced age he continues to pursue further academic qualifications. He urged Nigerians to cultivate a culture of intellectual curiosity and constant self-improvement.

The former president commended Oduwole for supporting his alma mater, stating that such gestures help raise educational standards and provide students with better opportunities to explore scientific knowledge.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology also praised the initiative. Representing the Commissioner for Education, Segun Olayiwola, the Zonal Director of Ibadan Zonal Educational Inspectorate 3, Latifat Jimoh, noted that contributions from individuals and organisations have continued to complement government efforts to improve public education.

According to coverage by The Guardian Nigeria, Jimoh said philanthropic support has played a vital role in upgrading school infrastructure, providing libraries, computer facilities, sanitation systems, and security support in many public schools across the state.

She added that the administration of Seyi Makinde remains committed to strengthening the education sector through policies and investments aimed at improving learning outcomes.

Also speaking at the event, Deji Adeleke, commended Oduwole’s gesture and encouraged other successful Nigerians to support educational initiatives in their communities.

In an interview reported by The Nation, Oduwole explained that his motivation was to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, and other professional fields.

“The goal is to create an environment that motivates young people to become scientists, engineers, innovators, and professionals who will contribute to the country’s development,” he said.

Earlier in her welcome address, the school’s principal, Mojisola Tiamiyu, expressed gratitude to the alumni group for the project. She encouraged current students to embrace the spirit of giving back to their alma mater in the future.

Education advocates say initiatives like the laboratory upgrade highlight the critical role of partnerships between government, alumni, and private individuals in strengthening Nigeria’s educational system and preparing students for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.
