Okupe: Tinubu’s UK Retreat is a Strategic Move Amidst National Challenges
Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has responded to criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s two-week trip to the United Kingdom, asserting that such critiques stem from a lack of understanding.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, Okupe addressed the backlash regarding the President’s decision to travel abroad for a vacation rather than remain in Nigeria. He emphasized that this retreat is crucial for the President to reflect on the past 17 months and devise a new direction for his administration.
Okupe stated, “I’ve come across numerous uninformed criticisms of the President’s holiday abroad. I believe that by stepping away from officials, friends, and associates, the President is allowing himself the space to think clearly and avoid political distractions as he considers changes to his cabinet.”
He further argued that remaining in Nigeria would not provide the peaceful environment necessary for such contemplation.
Okupe expressed optimism that the President’s return after this retreat would herald positive developments for the Nigerian people, bringing much-needed relief and comfort.
NAN notes that President Tinubu left Abuja on October 2 for the UK, marking his first vacation since taking office in May 2023. According to a statement from Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, this trip will serve as a working vacation focused on reflecting on his administration’s economic reforms, despite having undertaken several foreign trips during his tenure.
