Oyinlola: Tinubu Promised Renewed Hope, But Nigerians Are Facing Renewed Hardship
Former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming that instead of the “Renewed Hope” pledged during the 2023 election campaign, Nigerians are now enduring deepening hardship and disappointment.
Speaking on Frontline, a public affairs program on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese Ijebu, and monitored by DAILY POST in Abeokuta, the retired army general and two-term governor did not mince words in his evaluation of the country’s current state.
“During his campaign, he gave Nigerians the promise of a Renewed Hope,” Oyinlola said. “But what we are experiencing now is far from hopeful—it is renewed suffering. The economy is in disarray, and the average Nigerian is feeling the weight of it every day.”
Oyinlola served as Osun State governor from May 2003 to November 2010. In his recent remarks, he highlighted the sharp contrast between the government’s promises and the lived reality of millions of citizens.
He cited rising poverty levels, worsening insecurity, and economic instability as clear signs that the Tinubu administration has not only failed to meet expectations but has further deepened the country’s crises.
“Today, many Nigerians can’t even afford essential medications. We’re dealing with rising religious tensions, terrorism, insurgency, and widespread violence. People are scared, hungry, and struggling. This is not what was promised,” he added.
His comments come on the heels of a political endorsement last week, where Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership declared support for Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027.
While acknowledging the endorsement, Oyinlola clarified that it should be viewed as a calculated political gesture, not necessarily an expression of personal or ideological support for Tinubu.
“The endorsement is a strategic political decision. It doesn’t mean everyone involved is in agreement with the direction the country is heading under this administration,” he explained.
Oyinlola concluded by urging leaders to refocus on addressing the core issues affecting Nigerians, warning that continued neglect could further damage the nation’s stability and unity.
